Top 5 Best Places to Watch a Sunrise on Maui
While everyone raves about a good Hawaiian sunset, there is something inherently serene to rising early, grabbing a cup of coffee, and finding your way to the area’s best beach. There’s just something about the dawn of a new day that brings about peace, tranquility and a sense of renewed hope. These five Maui beaches are perfect for catching – and capturing – that elusive, stunning Hawaiian sunrise.
#1. Koki Beach Park
Koki Beach Park. The sunrise over the island of ‘Alau off the coast of Koki Beach Park is magnificent; in this particular photograph, the sun looks like a light bulb peeking through the clouds. It has been said that the island was utilized for sacred study by ancient Hawaiians.
#2. Secret Cove, or Makena Beach
Makena Cove. Best at sunset but can also be an amazing sunrise spot (much less crowds). To reach this not-so-secret cove, you must walk down a path, through a rock wall, and out onto the beach. While the beach is often crowded, its crystal clear water, lava rocks, and palm trees make it an idyllic spot to enjoy – or photograph – the sunrise.
#3. Oneloa Beach
Oneloa Beach. Also known as Ironwoods Beach, this beautiful strip of coastline is a quarter mile long located near Kapalua Resort, and rarely crowded. Where better than a secluded beach to start your morning and watch the sunrise?
#4. Hana Beach Park
Hana Beach Park. You don’t necessarily need clear skies to witness, or photograph, a stunning sunrise, so grab that raincoat and get out there regardless of the weather; sometimes a stormy morning can be as beautiful as a bright and sunny one. I’m not sure there is anything more stunning than the purple hues of this sunset contrasted against the black sand beach in this photograph taken at Hana Beach.
#5. Kamaole Beach Parks
Kamaole Beach Park. Not located on Maui’s east shore? No problem – you can still witness a magical sunrise at Kamaole Beach Park, and stay for the bay’s epic body surfing. This photo was taken from Kihei, peering at the West Maui Mountains over Maalaea, and while it isn’t of the direct sunrise, something about the subdued warmth of the sun makes it that much more inviting.
