Top 5 Beaches to Watch a Sunset on Kauai
A sunset can be either the perfect ending to a magnificent day, or the promise that tomorrow will bring about a new start. And nowhere are the sunsets more beautiful than in the Hawaiian Islands – specifically, these five Kauai beaches.
#1 Salt Pond Park
Named for its traditional salt collecting ponds, this beach is a popular spot for snorkeling, fishing and swimming in the winter due to the protective reef. This ethereal photograph, taken by Stefan Klopp, showcases the true magic that is the Hawaiian Islands.
#2 Kalalau Beach
Located on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast is Kalalau Beach, a super secluded beach only accessible via man-powered boat or difficult hiking trails (think an 11 mile hike recommended only for extremely experienced hikers). But, if you can manage the intense hike, the beach has some of the best sunsets on the island – as photographed by Micah Camara – and offers camping with a permit.
#3 Hanalei Bay
With nearly two miles of beach surrounded by mountains, Hanalei Bay is a popular spot along Kauai’s north shore for swimming, SUP and sail boating in the summer. This sunset captured by Alan Strakey is quite luminous, and full of gorgeous color.
#4 Kahalahala
This beach, commonly misrepresented as Lumahai Beach, was made famous in the movie South Pacific. The indirect sunset casts a stunning shadow on the beach, and makes the ocean sparkle in this photo taken by Patrickmoos, on Flickr. If you are interested in a different viewpoint, there is a path off the parking area that leads to a lovely lookout point overlooking the two beaches.
#5 Poipu Beach Park
Yes, Poipu Beach Park was featured as a prime spot to witness a Kauai sunrise, but the truth is that it is the perfect beach for sunrises, and sunsets; the orange hues in this sunset, captured by Jeremy Piehler, is proof of this fact.
*Bonus: Spouting Horn Blowhole
And one more spot perfect for viewing a sunset… Spouting Horn Blowhole
There is no wonder why this landmark is one of the most photographed spots on Kauai: Spouting Horn Blowhole is a stunning geologic feature of the island. And it is even more gorgeous at sunset, evidenced by this pink and orange hued sunset taken by Myheimu on Flickr.
While we would like to consider these places the best for sunset viewing on Kauai, many beaches will suffice.
